Ten Characters that I would Name My Pet After
I name most of my pets after characters! I didn’t name all of my current pets, some of them came to me with names. The ones I did name are Opie (Sons of Anarchy) and Nemo (Finding Nemo). I also had a dog named Rocky (The Rock) and I had one named Spike (Buffy).
Usually I stick with names from television or movies, but that’s only because those are the characters my husband and I both had in common. He’s not a big reader. In my head I’ve always thought of character names for my pets though, so this list is an easy one!
This is in no particular order.
#1. Sevro from the Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown
Because he was badass and fierce. One of my the best sidekicks in fiction.
#2. Manchee from Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness
Yes, he’s already a pet dog, but he was also one of the biggest personalities in A Knife of Never Letting Go. I loved him so much.
#3. Oberon from Iron Druid by Kevin Hearne
Yeah yeah, another dog. The funniest dog in fiction.
#4. Baz from Fangirl and Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
Frankly, I just think it would be an adorable name for a pet.
#5. Fraser from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
I wouldn’t want to name a pet after Jamie or Claire directly, but I’ll definitely steal their surname.
#6. Dobby from Harry Potter by JK Rowling
My daughter pointed out how cute Dobby would be for a pet. I can’t get it out of my head.
#7. Jesper from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
I loved all these characters, so it’s really just about how cute I think the name would be on a pet.
#8. Raffe from Angelfall by Susan Ee
This one is threefold. I know it’ll be for Raffe, but people will think I’m saying Raph for Raphael. That’s fine too. He’s my favorite Ninja Turtle and one of my favorite characters from Kate Daniels.
#9. Puck from The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Awesome character, awesome name. It’d be cute on a bird.
#10. Finnikin (Finn) from Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta
I couldn’t conclude this list without including my other favorite author, and of all her characters, I think Finnikin makes the cutest pet name.

Argh I’m the same! I name pets after characters too. I used to have a guinea pig called Morpheus. I’d recently watched the Matrix movies before buying him 🙂
Awesome name choices! I like Sevro in particular 😀

Right! I think it’ll be my pick for my next pet! Hopefully he’s just as feisty!

Great list. I kinda wanted to name my cat after a book character but unfortunately he came with a name and I didn’t want to confuse him.
It’s also really difficult to come up with something you wouldn’t be embarrassed shouting outside 🙂

I inherited a dog from my mom, a chihuahua, and her name was already Coco. Normally I don’t change their name. We did rescue a budgie, but it wasn’t held much and didn’t know it’s name, so we changed his to PeeWee.
What names were you imagining that you’d be embarrassed about?

Nothing specific in mind but I just remember someone at the stables where I kept my horse having a horse that came with the name J-Lo and the mortification of having to shout it across a field. I went for the rather unimaginative name Charlie for my horse as at the time I had a major crush on the character from Lost (I did consider a chocolate based name but thought Curly Wurly was just wrong)

Great names! If only I had a pet to use these haha.
I nominated you for the Versatile Blogger award if you don’t mind. Thanks!

I have Dobby on my list too. I think it’s the best name for a Sphynx cat.

Oh man, it would be perfect for a Sphynx cat! In the first days after my Yorkie gets groomed he looks like a furry Dobby. That’s where we came up with Dobby as a pet name. 🙂

It really is! Haha. I can see how a Yorkie would look like a cute, furry Dobby 🙂

Jesper would be such a cute name! I love all the Six of Crows character’s names, but if I were to choose one, I would definitely name a cat after Inej. I know some people who have a cat named Dobby, which I think is super cute and funny. My TTT: http://glitteringreads.com/2016/10/18/ten-wonderful-names-i-might-just-use-for-my-future-cats/

I almost picked Inej too, that one is great. Kaz too. But I went with Baz and they’re too similar. That whole crew has great names! Rotty would be another good one

Did you have to mention Manchee I’m going to cry omg. No but that really is a good pet name. My aunt got a dog for her kids a couple years ago, and its a pug/jack russel mix, and because it has huge eyes and ears and always looks so worried I took to calling her Dobby. We took her for a month once when my aunt went on holiday with the kids and when her daughter realised her god was answering to the name Dobby when they got back she cried. I felt both evil and hilarious at the same time.

That’s awesome! And great, because Dobby is a good name for a pet! (I’d totally honor Manchee by naming my dog after him!)

I read some of The Knife of Never Letting Go when it first came out. I was a fair bit younger and in my stage of flicking through books, spoiling the ending for myself, and then giving up. I did that with this book, but Manchee is a character that has stuck with me for a long time. I loved that dog! I might have to try and give that series another go and not spoil it for myself this time haha. Manchee just said the funniest things. Great list!

I take it you’re a Sons and Buffy fan? I currently have an Opie. Spike is in doggy heaven, sadly.
