Ha!  That’s a trick question!  There are none!  I hate scary movies!

Now you’re probably wondering what the heck the purpose of this post is then, right?  Despite my aversion to being scared, I still wanted to give you guys something interesting to read for Halloween.  ‘Interesting’ is subjective, I know.  You may find this post boring.  If it’s lame, you can tell me.  I can handle it.

Anyway, I racked my brain trying to come up with something different to write for Halloween.  (I don’t like being scared, but Halloween is still my favorite holiday. Go figure.)  I don’t mind reading scary books, so I could easily come up with those.  I could do scary covers, or villains.  Instead, I’ve asked two of my closest friends what they think the top five scariest movies are, since they both love horror movies.

Please welcome my wonderful husband, Mr Birdie, and one of my best friends, who I affectionately call Banana.  (She’s rolling her eyes, but I know she secretly loves it.)

Birdie – This wasn’t easy to write up.  The three of us were never together, so I wound up taking a piece of paper and going back and forth between them over the course of two weeks, trying to pin them down.  Almost like passing notes in class.  They were both really awesome, and I hope they know how much I appreciate them.

Banana – My first pick is Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).  Freddy has one of the scariest silhouettes I’ve ever seen.  He was the first of the slashers to speak and to have a personality.  And let’s face it, no matter how far or fast you run eventually you have to sleep and he’ll be there… waiting for you.

The scariest scene was when Nancy falls asleep in the bathtub and Freddy’s claw comes up from between her legs.

Bonus fact – Nightmare on Elm Street was Johnny Depp’s first movie!

Mr. Birdie – I agree that Freddy should definitely be on this list.  The thought of never being able to escape him is frightening.  You have to sleep.  I also like the fact that he was clever and taunted you.  I think my scariest scene would be the body bag with Tina in the hallway.

Banana – My next pick is Insidious Chapter 3 (2015).  Nothing scares me more than a good old fashioned ghost story.  Especially one that you think is there to help you but ends up f*cking your world up!  This movie is filled with pop up scares that keep you on the edge of your seat with suspense.

Scariest scene in the third Insidious installment was when Quinn is unable to move and the ghost is slowly walking around the room closing her in.

I have a bonus fact for this one too.  The woman that plays Elise (the medium) also plays the teacher in Nightmare on Elm Street!

Mr. Birdie – I haven’t seen Insidious 3, so instead I’m going to pick the Halloween Franchise.  I like the whole idea of an escaped mental patient, silent killer.  I don’t have any “bonus facts”, so la di da.

Oh wait, I got an interesting fact.  The mask that Michael wore was a William Shatner mask.  There you go.

Banana – Um, it’s turned inside out and painted white.

I agree with the Halloween movies being on the list.  I would have picked them but I knew you would.

Third for me is Pet Sematary (1989).  Stephen King knocks it out of the park with this one.  It makes you wonder how far you would go to put your family back together after a tragedy.  From the family cat to the beloved young son, sometimes dead is better.  The scariest scene, I thought, was Gage cutting Jud’s Achilles tendon with a scalpel.

Miko Hughes, who plays Gage, also plays the son in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.

Mr. Birdie – Pet Sematary is creepy, but it’s not on my list.  I would choose, for my third pick, the Rob Zombie series House of a Thousand Corpses and Devil’s Rejects.  It’s all about the deranged family, with the sister being just crazy and psychopathic, and the brother that’s sleeping with dead girls.  Then you have the crazy clown dad.  I like how Rob Zombie makes it that you almost cheer for the bad guys.

My interesting fact is that the sister in these movies is Rob Zombie’s wife.  Yeah.

Banana – I’m going with Event Horizon (1997) for my fourth pick. Imagine being trapped on a space ship in outer space that manifests your worst fears.  There’s no escape and you are forced to watch your friends suffer and die from a sinister force that cannot be stopped, and knowing you are next.

Scariest scene; when the doctor goes evil and starts helping take down the others.  Also, Lawrence Fishburn, who plays the captain, also plays an orderly in Nightmare on Elmstreet 3.

Mr. Birdie – Really??  Space what?  What the hell are you talking about?  I’ve never even heard of that movie.

Okay, my fourth pick is Exorcism of Emily Rose.  I mean, demon anything scares the hell out of me.  I think what makes the movie really interesting is that it’s not only a demon exorcism movie, it’s actually based off true events.  It’s not just a scary movie, it’s a trial movie too and blends two of my favorite genres.

Banana – True Events… Riiiiight.

Mr. Birdie – MY Interesting fact is that it was based off actual events but it was a boy not a girl, and it was in England.  The priest took the boy off his epilepsy medicine and the boy died.

…space…  *shaking his head*

Banana – There is nothing wrong with this movie taking place in space.  Um, hello!  Alien! Are you saying that movie blows  because it’s also in space?!? Don’t knock it till you see it.

Mr. Birdie – Yes, actually Alien blows because it is in space.  Everything blows if it’s in space.

Banana – Lastly, I’m going with Haunting in Connecticut (2009).  It’s bad enough that your teenage son has cancer but now you’ve gone and moved into a haunted house.  Now you have to wonder, is your son going crazy from the treatments or is something more ominous going on?  Not only do you feel bad for the family in this movie, but by the end you also feel bad for the ghost.

Scariest scene was Matt doing sit ups in the basement and when he rocks up the ghost is right in his face.

Guess what, Kyle Gallner, who plays Matt, stars in the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street.

Mr. Birdie – You picked these movies because they all tied back to Nightmare on Elm Street.

Banana – Maybe I did, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that they are all good movies!

Mr. Birdie – I remember seeing Haunting in Connecticut.  It’s the movie where the kid woke up with all the writing on him.  It was alright.

My fifth one would be -it’s kind of a stupid movie, but I’m going to count it anyway- 13 Ghosts.  Just because those ghosts were scary as hell.  I think they did a really good job with the creation of the ghosts.  They were really scary, but you can’t see them without the  special glasses.  The overall plot was cheesy as hell, but the ghosts were well done and scary.

Interesting fact, this movie has nothing to do with Nightmare on Elm Street.

Banana – Matthew Lillard is in the movie, and he also starred in Scream which was directed by Wes Craven, who wrote Nightmare on Elm Street!  So Boo on you!  (I know I might be reaching but I still did it!)
