Diversity Spotlight Thursday was created by Aimal @ Bookshelves & Paperbacks. (The link takes you to her original Diversity Spotlight post, where she talks about her motivation for creating this meme. You should check it out.)
As I was searching for another meme to participate in I was especially drawn to Diversity Spotlight Thursday. I do love the idea of sharing books with a wide range of characters, but it was also because I’m always on the hunt for reading material that showcases people who are different from myself.
The way it works is simple. You select three books to highlight each week, using this format:
- A diverse book you have read and enjoyed
- A diverse book that has already been released but you have not read
- A diverse book that has not yet been released
A Diverse Book I Have Read and Enjoyed
Maybe it’s because I just read this book, or because it’s one of my favorite series, but I really love how diverse JCP’s cast is. What I really love is that it’s a diverse book that isn’t about diversity. They’re just a group of every day diverse friends, and I love it.
A Diverse Book That Has Already Been Released, but I Have Not Read
(Lord, I just love that cover!) This book has been out a while, and I’ve heard so many good things. Out of all the LGBT books I’ve read, I’ve never read one that was F/F, and this looks the perfect book to delve in. I just need to get my grabby little hands on it.
A Diverse Book that Has Not Been Released
I’m taking a wild guess with this one. Lunar Chronicles was pretty diverse, and even though it wasn’t my favorite I can’t help but really want Renegades. I’m really hoping that Marissa Meyer doesn’t let us down and this new group of superheroes brings all the diversity!
My wife had challenges with the diversity in the Lunar Chronicles. She said she felt like it was diversity for the sake of and that none of it really affected the story. She also got tired of the heteronormativity. I didn’t find it as problematic as she did, but I hope that Renegades would be more to her liking diversity-wise.

Well, I mentioned the diversity in Lunar Chronicles but overall I didn’t like the books much. I do see her point about it being diversity for the sake of, but not really affecting the story, but sometimes i kind of like that. Stories about Diversity are so important, but I think stories that just have a diverse cast are too. Our image of a group of friends should be one that’s diverse, even in the most mundane situations. Not that I’m saying Lunar Chronicles was mundane. Just that growing up I had a diverse group of friends, and we just did normal stuff. And sometimes I think it’s okay to show that too.
I’m not even sure I’m explaining myself clearly, haha.

That Marissa Meyer cover really is stunning. I still haven’t read Heartless, and after reading some of the reviews, I’m not sure I want to. I don’t think she’s an author for me.
Not surprised to see JCP up there. 🙂

I love the Heartless cover so much. Especially the hidden hardback under the dustjacket, but yeah. I agree, I’m not sure she’s for me either. I do want to try Renegades though, because I’m a sucker for a Superhero novel.

‘Skin After Skin’ sounds like a great read, although looking at it on Amazon I see it’s book 8 in the series …I think it would be advisable for me to start at book 1 perhaps, so I can get a feel for the characters 😀

Oh man yes! Plus, the series is actually about this guy name Vic who can see ghosts. It’s an awesome series! Crash is one of his friends, and the author thought it was important to get a book from his perspective.

oh yeah! That’s totally on my list. I think I shared it for one of my previous Diversity Spotlights. I’ve been planning to read that one, since it’s a spinoff of Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda.

I hadn’t heard about the Psycop series but I’ve just bought the first one! It sounds interesting and I do sometimes like stories that have diversity in them without it being the focus of the plot. Great post!

Oh man! You’re seriously in for a treat. The first one is short, but so good. If you keep going, they get longer and even better!
