Turn Coat by Jim Butcher
The Dresden Files #11
Urban Fantasy

About the Book: When it comes to the magical ruling body known as the White Council, Harry keeps his nose clean and his head down. For years, the Council has held a death mark over Harry’s head. He’s still thought of as a black sheep by some and as a sacrificial lamb by others. But none regard him with more suspicion and disdain than Morgan, a veteran Warden with a grudge against anyone who bends the rules.
Like Harry.
So when Morgan turns up asking for help, Harry isn’t exactly eager to leap into action. Morgan has been accused of treason against the White Council, and there’s only one final punishment for that crime. He’s on the run, he wants his name cleared, and he needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog.
Like Harry.
Now Harry must uncover a traitor within the Council, keep a less than agreeable Morgan under wraps, and avoid coming under scrutiny himself. And a single mistake may cost someone his head.
Like Harry…
Oh my gosh, that was so good! I’ve really missed Harry and the gang! I don’t know what made me wait so long to return to this world, but I’m so glad my slump and need for comfort reads brought me back. I won’t be taking such a long break again, that’s for sure.
Turn Coat really ups the story, I think. Things for Harry have been changing for a long time, but you can really see how everything’s coming to a climax in this one. Not only do you have Harry helping his nemesis Morgan, but the basis of their non-friendship is challenged in a really superb way. We’ve all hated Morgan for so long, but I think that’s because this is our first chance to really try and understand him. I think I wound up with a new perspective, that’s for sure.
The same is also true of Harry and McCoy. I’m a humongous fan of paternal relationships in fiction, and this is a good example of a bond that’s both sticky and true. They hit a rough patch previously, but you can still tell how much they care about each other.
And Thomas… *sigh*… I can’t even talk about that yet. Instead, let’s talk about Mouse! Where can I get a foo dog! I mean, he’s fantastic! There’s nothing better then a great canine companion in the story.
So, normally I quickly determine if the plot was what hooked me, or if it was the characters/relationships. However, in Turn Coat I can’t really decide. Everything’s heating up with the White Council, the vampires, Harry’s life… AND, all of his friendships and relationships are growing, from Murphy all the way down to Molly. Honestly, the book was so well-roundedly good, it just made me feel happy. I love when you have high expectations and your book meets every single one.
I hear Changes is a game changer (pun intended), and I’m apprehensive, but not enough to put off reading it for over a year again! I’ll be back with Harry very very soon!
Wonderful review Birdie! God I wish he’d get cracking with Peace Talks already!😒

It’s been my goal to be caught up before Peace Talks come out, so I haven’t minded how long it’s taking, haha.

I love UF, but can you believe I’ve never read any Jim Butcher?! You’ve really inspired me, though. I haven’t read a good UF book in a while, and I’m due.

Oh my gosh! It’s so original for a UF, like little to no romance, but a world that’s extremely complex and well thought out. You will love it!

This is a series that I need to catch up with. Off the top of my head I can’t recall where I’m up to – around No.6 or 7 I think.

I’ve been moving so slowly, but I think too slowly, lol. My goal was to be ready for Peace Talks.

I love the Dresden books – they’re so good I finish them quickly then regret it and think I should have taken longer reading them.

That’s exactly why I’ve been trying to pace myself. Once I’m caught up then I’ll definitely be waiting.
