I’ve realized today that I don’t really wish for a prequel in any genre other than forms of Fantasy.
There’s something about the start of some Fantasy novels that begs the question, ‘how did we get here?’ I don’t think any of these would be books with a happy ending, but I think I’d still read them just to understand. I’d also like the prequels VC Andrews style, with the prequel coming out after the series is over… because I want to read it knowing how everything ends up.
Anyway, here’s my five.
Top 5 Tuesday was started by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm!
Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
While reading Nevernight and Godsgrave I found myself fascinated with the history between Mia’s mom and dad. What was their relationship like? How did they feel about their children? We get a few moments with Mia’s mom, but very little about her father. There are so many secrets being revealed throughout the series, and even though I know it will break my heart I still want to read where it went wrong.
Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta
Finnikin starts off with a curse. The town is cut off from the world. You have the people inside Lumatere who are locked in, and you have the exiles on the outside who can’t get home. Finnikin is trying to break the curse, and return his people. It’s the perfect book for a prequel. I’d love to read life before the curse, and how everything fell apart. I’d love to see Trevanian and Finn’s mom, Bartolina, in love.
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
In The Knife of Never Letting Go, Todd lives in a town where there are no women. He believes that they’ve all died, due to the noise, but finds out how that’s not exactly what went down. Even just reading that sentence, don’t you want a prequel so you can read the story? Don’t you want to know what happened to the women? Yeah, me too.
Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion
Who is R? Why was he in a suit? Why doesn’t he want to remember?
We find out some of the answers in the second book, and I think we’ll get more in the third. Regardless, I want to read what his life was like, where he came from, and how he died.
Feed by Mira Grant
The beauty that is Feed lies in how the world continued to thrive, despite the zombie apocalypse. In my head, I’ve always imagined the end of the world similar to Walking Dead. From the Walking Dead, I can imagine how people developed small compounds (like in Rot & Ruin)… but it’s hard to imagine whole cities pulling back from the brink. It’s hard to imagine the government holding elections. That’s what makes a prequel for Feed so interesting. How did we combat the monsters? I’d definitely read it. It’s even got a happy ending!
Some really good books there that I need to look into further.

Yes, a prequel to Warm Bodies would be amazing! I want to know how R got to that point, too – I mean, he couldn’t even really tell how old he was, so he could have been anyone!

Right! And what up with the suit, right? I mean, some questions are answered in Burning World, but his thoughts and motivations aren’t there. I want to know who he was in his head.

YES! Nevernight!! I want so much more from that world! It would be nice to learn about her parents and how she grew up with Mr Kindly! You’re right about fantasy though – it seems the only time I want more is with a fantasy. I’m ok with accepting the world as it is, but sometimes a mind wanders and wants to know how it all came to be 🙂
Thanks so much for participating – added you to the list 🙂

Right! And then, not only is it usually Fantasy but it’s also usually going to be a prequel that ends in tragedy. Doesn’t matter. I still want to read it.

I’m starting to think bookworms are asking for pain. We all know it will ruin us, but we beg for it 😂

Seems like you pulled this week’s list directly from my TBR. Lol. Wait for me before we start writing prequels!

I’ll make sure to add that to my author proposals. 🙂

I find that most of the books I want prequels too are fantasies as well (YA usually), but then the author usually does come out with some novella prequel!
