About the Book: On a floating junkyard beneath a radiation sky, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap.

Eve isn’t looking for secrets—she’s too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she’s just spent six months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, and the only thing keeping her Grandpa from the grave was the fistful of credits she just lost to the bookies. To top it off, she’s discovered she can destroy electronics with the power of her mind, and the puritanical Brotherhood are building a coffin her size. If she’s ever had a worse day, Eve can’t remember it.

But when Eve discovers the ruins of an android boy named Ezekiel in the scrap pile she calls home, her entire world comes crashing down. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic conscience, Cricket, in tow, she and Ezekiel will trek across deserts of irradiated glass, infiltrate towering megacities and scour the graveyard of humanity’s greatest folly to save the ones Eve loves, and learn the dark secrets of her past.

Even if those secrets were better off staying buried.

review

LifeL1K3 really put me through the ringer!  It was a highly emotional read.  I was up and down, loving and hating these characters in equal measure.  Actually, it was mostly just Eve.  Still, it’s not even a criticism because in this instance my feelings were all over the place because the story was so freaking good.  I cared about Eve.  I also cared about Zeke, Lemon and Cricket.  I loved every single one of them, and so when they struggled I struggled with them.  That was the source of my pain.

Frankly I didn’t expect to enjoy LifeL1K3 as much as I did.  Sci-Fi can be hard for me, because I’ve never been a scientific person.  Admitting this bruises my self-esteem, but when things get too science-y I space out.  So, for the first few chapters of LifeL1K3 I was worried.  I wasn’t sure I was really connecting to the heroine and her problems.  Thankfully I was eventually sucked in so easily I can’t pinpoint exactly when it happened.  I just found at some point my breath was coming faster and I was fidgeting in my seat, so full of anxiety for these people.  Because whether they’re a LifeLike, Android, or Logika, they’re all people and I loved them.

I have so much to say, so much to discuss, but to go there on this type of review platform would be cruel to future readers.  LifeL1K3 is the kind of book that would be a travesty to spoil.  There are so many twists and turns!  Jay Kristoff wrote some of them to be obvious, but I promise you will still be sideswiped by stuff you never saw coming!  It’ll shock you all the way up to the end, and what a freaking ending!  I’m seriously dying inside, because how in the hell am I going to wait for a sequel that doesn’t even have a name yet!  This is the downside of getting to review an ARC, because my wait time is LONGER!  And how will I ever survive it??!

I fell into the story Jay Kristoff was telling unconsciously, but I will be consciously waiting however long it takes to fall into whatever he writes next.  I’m eager to be broken by this author again.

Rating: 5-feathers

Thank you to Knopf Books and Rockstar Book Tours for providing a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

About Birdie

Don’t look for her in any bar, club, crazy raging party, or anywhere there may be a large gathering of strangers. She’s more likely to be found tucked into the corner of the couch watching one of her favorite shows, or preferably under a comforter with her current novel.
