Thank goodness I could come up with 5 Sci-Fi titles that I loved, since I rarely read Sci-Fi. It’s a genre that I should spend more time with, because when I was scrolling through my books to look for my favorites I realized that I do generally like them. (Unless they’re too technical, then I struggle.)
For my list today I tried really hard to stick to actual Sci-Fi, meaning machines and futuristic, and without any paranormal leaning at all. If I’d included Dystopia or Fantasy elements, this list would have been a lot longer.
I have a feeling most of my selections will be on many other lists. What do you think?
Top 5 Tuesday was started by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm!
LifeL1K3 by Jay Kristoff
I JUST finished LifeL1K3, but it made a huge impression on me. I’ve heard of fans being grumpy with an author for ripping their guts out, but it’s never personally happened to me. Reading LifeL1K3 was the closest I’ve come. I came thisclose to tweeting Mr. Kaufman and asking him what the hell he thought he was doing with that ending! It’s not okay to toy with our emotions like that… except it is okay, because I loved it. I can’t wait for more.
Red Rising by Pierce Brown
Even though I’ve only chosen to showcase Red Rising here, my choice applies to the entire series. Pierce Brown’s debut series is absolutely one of the best Sci-Fi series out there. I was definitely one of his super fans jumped up and down with glee and squees when he announced another three books after we thought it was over. Spectacular!
Unwind by Neal Shusterman
Unwind is probably one of the most thought provoking books I’ve ever read. The idea of Unwinding alone is enough to keep you up at night, but when you add Storking, and the birth of an Unwind to the concept and it’s enough to consume you. Unwind is probably also one of the most controversial book too, because even though Neal Shusterman doesn’t take sides in the debate, he definitely forces you to question yourself. It’s definitely one of the best Sci-Fi books I’ve read.
Murmuration by TJ Klune
I bet you aren’t surprised to see I’ve managed to sneak TJ Klune onto this list! It’s not a surprise to me, because I know (as a fan) that TJ writes all over the fictional genre list. Murmuration is a bit Twilight Zone meets Sci-Fi, and it’s fascinating. I highly recommend it.
Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
I’m positive that Illuminae is going to be all over this weeks Top 5 Tuesday. It’s definitely a great read, and I’m not sure how much more I can say about it that others haven’t. If you want Sci-Fi, Illuminae and it’s sequels has it all.
sci fi and I struggle so much XD
I think it’s because I moreso read for characters, and sci fi always gets really plot intensive???
AND OH MY GOD TJ KLUNE WHHHHHH HE’S DONE SCI FI TOO?????
OUR BOYYY?????
it’s offical, tj klune is actually a god.

I am dying to read Red Rising. It sounds like such a great read and the cover is stunning. I also really want to buy Illuminae. I bought it on my kindle but I have yet to read it. I’m glad you enjoyed both books! I hope I enjoy them just as much! (:

I was excited when I saw your post because I love sci-fi and am always looking for new reads! I’m like you; if the book is too technical I struggle to get into it. Red Rising sounds really interesting; just added it to my TBR list 🙂

It’s really good! Just a warning that the beginning is slow, but if you push through it you’ll be hooked!

Definitely! Unfortunately I think it’s a genre that I can read too much of back to back, haha.

‘Red Rising’ is on my TBR list! I’ve not much of a history with science fiction, either. I had great fun with the Illuminae series, though. My current favourite sci fi read is ‘The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet’ by Becky Chambers. It’s adorable.

It’s sci-fi but comedy or drama?

It’s very much about the characters rather than the action/traditional sci fi features. Sweet in some places and heartbreaking in others.

Murmuration was totally like a Twilight Zone episode. And no I’m not surprised you sneaked it in lol. It’s the only one on this list I’ve read, but I’ve heard great things about the others!
