The Wonderful World of Webtoons!

WebtoonI jumped on the bandwagon late, and I think maybe I’m outside the target age group, but damn have I gotten bitten by the webtoon bug!
It happened by accident.  I stumbled on a Buzzfeed article about the author of Small World, and that was the rabbit hole that led me to the Webtoon app, where I devoured every single episode of Small World and then scoured the site fiending for more.  Today I’m sharing my favorites!

*All toon title links will take you to my favorite panels, or if it’s a serial story it takes you to episode 1!  Please Please Please click them!

Top 5 Favorite Toons!

1. Small World

What do you do when you’re having a bad day? Need a hug? Or just a laugh? Call your boyfriend of course! Follow along with Robin and Julien as they navigate in their own small world. — Created by Wonsun Jin

Small WorldNot only was Small World my gateway webtoon, it is also still one of my favorite webtoons to read.  Baby Chick, who of course is now also a Webtoon fan, and I have lengthy conversations about the adorableness of Robin and Julien.  We both love how Julien is a super sexy, athletic, popular man incredibly in love with his nerdy, gamer boyfriend.  We love how Robin is the one to slow the relationship down, yet is the possessive one.  Everything about Small World is perfection!

2. Let’s Play

Sam wants to be a game developer, but before her career can get started, a popular gaming personality posts a video of himself playing her first game and gives it a bad review. To make matters worse, she soon finds out he’s her new neighbor! A story about gaming, memes, and social anxiety. Come for the plot, stay for the doggo. — Created by Mongie

Let's Play.jpgLet’s Play is the second webtoon I started following.  Not only does it have a really great story, so much energy was put into Sam and Marshall’s friends and family too.  Each and every character has their own backstory and personality, so to me it what makes Let’s Play the most well rounded toon I read.  Plus, I relate to Sam’s anxiety disorder on a personal level, I can’t help but love her.  AND she has a Boston Terrier named Bowser!  The dog’s amazing.  Sam’s amazing.  The story is amazing.  Everything is amazing!

3. Waffles & Pancakes

Two best friends attempt to answer life’s greatest mysteries, such as “what if our butts had nipples?” This is a story of fart jokes and friendship. Currently updates on Tue, Thur, Sat. May not be suitable for younger audiences due to strong language and sexual references. — Created by DT Saranya

Waffles PancakesThey are not joking about the strong language and sexual references in Waffles & Pancakes.  It is definitely dirty humor, which isn’t always my thing, but the creator of this webtoon knows how to do it right!  Aiden and Kaia are both so hilarious in extremely different ways.  Not only does it make for one of the most entertaining toons, but it also sets up these friends for equally heartwarming moments too.  If you don’t click any other links, click the one for Waffles & Pancakes.  You.  Will.  Laugh.  I promise.

4. I Love Yoo

Dogged by pain and misfortune from the very beginning, Shin-Ae decides she wants nothing to do with people nor anything to do with romance. Although content with her unsocial, boring, loveless existence, her lifestyle is challenged after she ruins an unsuspecting strangers’ clothes. — Created by Quimchee

I Love YooOf all the webtoons I follow, I Love Yoo is the one that has brought out the most emotion in me.  I’ve been sad, angry, romantic, and laughing, all within a few episodes.  This one is all about Shin Ae, the troubles she’s faced, her inability to let people in, and the two guys who seem to get her questioning life.  It is a triangle, and readers very much have favorites, including me, but it really is more than a love story.  It’s about friendship, and familial ties.  I know how I want it to end, yet I’m going to be sad when it actually does.  I love this story.

5. Lumine

A runaway werewolf, Lumine, meets a witch boy named Kody and is being hired to work as his bodyguard. Lumine, being determined to befriend Kody, tries everything to get Kody to trust him, while Kody tries to keep Lumine away from him. Their life gets even more complicated after an unfortunate event that leaves them to try to survive on their own. — Created by Emma Krogell

LumineWhile Lumine has always been listed as one of the top webtoons, I only just broke down and read it.  My always picked romance heavy toons, and Lumine is not romantic.  The connection between Lumine and Kody is brotherly, and I devoured it in days.  It hooked me immediately with the artwork, the beauty of Lumine himself (in any form) and his loyalty to Kody who isn’t easy to care for.  I just caught up on all current episodes and it’s now it’s the toon I crave updates for the most.  I ❤ Lumine!

There are others I read, so it’s really hard to stop here!  If you read any webtoons and you want to compare, leave a comment, tweet me, send an email, however you want to chat!  I’d love to share my love!

About Birdie

Don’t look for her in any bar, club, crazy raging party, or anywhere there may be a large gathering of strangers. She’s more likely to be found tucked into the corner of the couch watching one of her favorite shows, or preferably under a comforter with her current novel.
