I feel like I’ve talked about my bookish habits, so I’ve tried to come up with habits I’ve never talked about before. Now, your job is to not leave me out on the limb by myself. I know I’m not alone here.

Inverting Books on my Bookshelf

I’m not even sure I’m saying it right, so let me explain. When I stock my home bookshelves, I have to puzzle them out so the taller books are on the outer ends of the shelf, and they move toward the center in height, making the shelves look like different versions of the letter “V”. Small books must sit in the middle of the shelf, or on a slant so it looks like a slide. Never ever can they be haphazard. So, this image, drawn by BRex:

While it was drawn from actually books on my shelf, is a poor representation of how these books are actually shelved. Outlander would be, for sure, on the end.

Purchasing Print Books in Hardcover

There was a time in my reading life where I never ever bought a book in hardcover. When I was young, I hated carrying a large hardcover book around to read. They were so awkward. I loved paperbacks because they were more malleable. I could fold them, break the spine, and read one handed. Also, back then I loved how worn and loved my books looked. I was a dog earer and everything.

Today I’m the opposite. I read on an ereader, and one of those books speaks to me (which is when I buy the print book) it has to be in hardcover. They are so beautiful on your bookshelves, with their strength and vibrancy… I even prefer reading a hardcover more now. They’re not awkward, their regal. I’m team Hardcover all the way.

Book Pushing

This one speaks for itself. I’ve read and loved a book, so therefore everyone must also read and love the book to. Everyone. Even if you’re not a reader. Obviously if you’re not a reader it’s because you haven’t read the right book, and it’s CLEAR the book I just finished is the magical one!

Yes, logically I know this isn’t true, but how can anyone not love something as fabulous as a good book?!

Equating Everything to “A Story I Once Read”

I know I can’t be the only one. We read so much, for every situation there has to be a way to relate it to a book. Friend gets back together with her ex, and to Birdie it’s a second chance romance. Another friend is living “Best Friend’s Brother” romance.

I hear a story told, and usually the next words out of my mouth are “That reminds me of a book I read…”

Entering Someone Else’s Home assessing them based on Books/Bookshelves

I enter someone else’s home, the first thing I look for is a bookshelf. Do they have one? While I (even as a child) never lived in a home without multiple bookshelves, as an adult I now realize not all people have one. I don’t necessarily think we won’t have much in common if you don’t have a bookshelf, I’m just likely to notice it.

If you do have a shelf, I will pause to look all of your books and see if we read anything in common. Is it all nonfiction, or fiction. Is it all sci-fi or romance. All of the selections tell me something about you

About Birdie

Don’t look for her in any bar, club, crazy raging party, or anywhere there may be a large gathering of strangers. She’s more likely to be found tucked into the corner of the couch watching one of her favorite shows, or preferably under a comforter with her current novel.

    Nope. You’re not the only one. I’m a book pusher through and through. And I don’t even need to finish the book. I remember saying to my bbf (book best friend): Hey, you need to read “written in read” I’m 5% in and its absolutely Kate-quality.

    Also, when I got my apartment, I did New Year’s Eve party in there, even before I moved in. I had a sofa, a bed and a bookshelf, so I was all set. First thing one of my friends commented was “wow, we like to read the same books”.

      Hell yes! I feel an immediate connection with anyone who reads the same books I do. I also love walking into a house with many shelves, because I feel like anyone who decorates their house with bookshelves has got to also be a bookworm at least on some level.

      Also, I love it when someone comes into my house and immediately looks through my bookshelves. I puff up and get all proud, lol.

    HAHAHAHA! I didn’t realize I did this until you mentioned it but – when I go into a persons house I search for books and I MUST read the titles of every book they have….. and then I judge them….. I didn’t realize I did that! Why did you have to point that out?? lol

    I used to hate HC and that’s what I love now, too. And I definitely check out books at other people’s houses. I even do it when watching tv to see if I’d like the person or not. It’s kind of weird, but I realized awhile ago that I do it.

    I’m the opposite – I really don’t like owning / reading hardbacks. They’re so bulky and uncomfortable – not to mention more expensive! I much prefer paperbacks. The only downside is, when new books come out that I’m super excited about, I have to wait for them to turn up in my library or wait for the paperback release, which is usually a year or so AFTER the original hardback publication date!

      That publication wait was why I even started buying hardcovers in the first place. It drove me insane to wait, and then it drove me insane to have half a series in paper and the other half hardback. So, I switched, lol. Now I love hardbacks more. They last so long if you take care of them.
