Changes by Jim Butcher
Dresden Files #12

I recently told a fellow blogger that Kate Daniels was the queen of urban fantasy. I still stand by that statement as fact. However, I now have to say Harry Dresden is, hands down, the King of Urban Fantasy.
(Capitalized to make it Truth.)
The magic of Kate is in the romance. The magic of Harry is everything else. There isn’t one big love story in Harry’s life. He has relationships, and sometimes one-night stands, but his story doesn’t hinge on romantic love. It’s everything “Urban” in urban fantasy. It’s gritty and rough. He wins and loses. Harry gets hurt, and he gets back up. He’s always the underdog, but not because he’s weak. Instead, it’s because he’s always taking on something big.
And the series intricacy!
My goodness, Changes is the twelfth book in the series and still, secrets are being revealed. I’m not talking about secrets from only the last book or even the book before that. I’m talking about secrets kept for 10-12 books! Changes had closure to some of Harry’s problems from the first book.
This world, Harry’s world, is always changing. Where we are in Changes is a far cry from where we were in Storm Front, and yet everything that happed wasn’t forgotten. I freaking loved it. I love when all these books later we realize how bamboozled we were by Jim Butcher. He knew exactly what he was doing, and I happily succumbed. On the other hand, there are things I’ve wanted for so long -ahem: Murphy- and we got just a whisper taste. A tease, really. And again we were left on the precipice, just enough to make me eager for the next book.
This is a series I would recommend to both women and men, to fantasy lovers and romance lovers.
Or wizard lovers. Or action lovers.
I really wanted to be caught with the fandom, so I could join the conversation when Peace Talks was released. I’m not. But, the upside is I continue to have more published books in front of me.
Maybe I’m the true winner?
