About the Book: Gina Royal is the definition of average—a shy Midwestern housewife with a happy marriage and two adorable children. But when a car accident reveals her husband’s secret life as a serial killer, she must remake herself as Gwen Proctor—the ultimate warrior mom.

With her ex now in prison, Gwen has finally found refuge in a new home on remote Stillhouse Lake. Though still the target of stalkers and Internet trolls who think she had something to do with her husband’s crimes, Gwen dares to think her kids can finally grow up in peace.

But just when she’s starting to feel at ease in her new identity, a body turns up in the lake—and threatening letters start arriving from an all-too-familiar address. Gwen Proctor must keep friends close and enemies at bay to avoid being exposed—or watch her kids fall victim to a killer who takes pleasure in tormenting her. One thing is certain: she’s learned how to fight evil. And she’ll never stop.

It’s past time I read a book by Rachel Caine. I’ve stared at her books long enough. For years; I’m ashamed to say. I waited too long. If you are curious why, please pause and read this.

What I discovered by reading this book was Rachael Caine can write. I’m past my Urban Fantasy phase, but that’s okay. The upside is, this fantastic author wasn’t lumped into the dozens of similar books I was reading in that time. Instead, she stands out in a world full of the same kind of thrillers today.

It wasn’t that long ago I was scouring the bookshelves, searching for a series featuring a female main character who was a badass. I had no idea Rachel Caine wrote it, but I’ve found it now and I’m in love.

Stillhouse Lake gave me a strong and resiliant heroine. Gwen Proctor took a shattered life and rebuilt herself into someone who could keep her children safe. I can’t even imagine continuing after finding out your husband is a serial killer, let alone recreating yourself into someone formidable.

Talk about girl power!

The little town of Norton was the perfect setting. In fact, I spent a lot of time worrying Gwen’s little family would have to leave their home on Stillhouse Lake. They made a home, with a deck. It’s a dream home, and this family deserves a dream.

Stillhouse Lake was so good, I had to set aside my ARC so I could jump right into the second book, Killman Creek.

If you’re looking for a great serial thriller, grab this series. You’ll only be disappointed by how long it took you to find it.

About Birdie

Don’t look for her in any bar, club, crazy raging party, or anywhere there may be a large gathering of strangers. She’s more likely to be found tucked into the corner of the couch watching one of her favorite shows, or preferably under a comforter with her current novel.

  2. Yes, the Rachel Caine news is so sad. 😦 I’ve always enjoyed her writing. I started with the Morganville Vampires series when it came out. Then, I switched to this one. I love this series so much! I’ve read all the books. I would recommend them for sure.
