It took me a very long time to get through Into the Drowning Deep.  I tried reading this when it came out, but it didn’t really hook me at the time.  I ended up quitting somewhere around 20%, but knowing how much I love Mira Grant, I knew I couldn’t truly DNF it.  When I went looking for something specific recently, my mind immediately clicked on this one again, and this time I flew through it.  I don’t know what was wrong with me before, but reading it now reminded me of just how much I love Mira Grant’s imagination.

I keep trying to convince my friends to read this book, but the moment I say ‘killer mermaids’ I get an eye roll and a laugh, but guess what!?  They were freaking scary!  Into the Drowning Deep made me hyperventilate, and a few times I even shouted ‘Oh shit!’ and made my husband jump!  The mermaids in this book are biologically possible, or at least it all seemed to make sense to me.  It felt like the author did a lot of research on marine animals, and should something like a mermaid exist, how could it be biologically possible.  It was more than that too, because the mermaids felt like their existence could be real but it was also tied with all the mermaid lore.  Where did the idea of ‘sirens’ come from?  What about the legend of the singing mermaids calling sailors to their doom?  Into the Drowning Deep answers all of those questions, and the marriage of science and myth brought these creatures to life for me.

It also had a very broad and interesting cast.  I knew going in we were going to lose a lot of them, but I had my core group I really prayed would make it through to the end.  Some did…. and some didn’t, and it hurt my heart.  Into the Drowning Deep also had a F/F couple, and I adored them. In fact, if pressured to offer one critique, I wish the story focused more on them as a couple and built up the romance a little more.  I always get extra caught up in the feels when there are strong relationships on the line.  Not just the girls, but even their ties to their friends and family.  I hated seeing any of them lose their loved ones, even if I knew it was going to happen.

Into the Drowning Deep was everything I expected it to be and more.  It was intelligent, believable, and creepy as all hell.  Those three adjectives are the ones I’d use for all the Mira Grant books I’ve read, and I’ll never doubt her again.

    I loved this book! So happy to read your review and be reminded of how AWESOME this book is. 🙂 I hope she writes more — I feel like there’s a lot more to know about the mermaids.
