Made for You was damn good. I’m so glad I discovered Anyta Sunday last year. She’s my ‘feel good’ favorite because her books always pull me out of a funk and make me so happy.
Nobody does slow burn like Anyta Sunday.
Another thing Anyta Sunday does well is plotting a romance, with good conflict, without relying on miscommunication as a crutch. There’s always an obstacle standing in the way, but Jack and Sam always talks. They’re always upfront. I love that. It’s my favorite.
One of the obstacles was the age difference between Ben and Jack, but it was the minor obstacle. I liked that, too. I liked how age wasn’t what was holding Jack back. It was almost like he recognized how years had no affect on how Ben aged. The number of days you’ve existed on earth has no bearing on your wisdom. Life experience does that. And Ben has had too much life experience for his 23 years. He was plenty mature enough for Jack, and through ways Jack probably wishes he wasn’t.
The other obstacle standing in the way of their relationship is the fact that Sam is the caregiver of one of Jack’s students. Obviously this is the far bigger issue. Not only did Jack feel it was inappropriate, he felt his job was on the line if he crossed the educator/caregiver line. Still, he never let his fears or his reasons for keeping his distance prevent him being there for them.
Even when he wasn’t sure it would work out, Jack wanted to do right by his boys.
That connection forged between the two men is what made this story so perfect. However, Ben’s little brother Milo was the perfect cherry on top. He was so cute, so witty, and so clever. Once upon a time I wouldn’t have said stories with kids were my forte, but I’m here now to exclaim I was wrong. Milo was the child that opened my eyes. He made me look back and realize how I’ve kinda loved all of them. (Anyta and TJ need to get together to write a crossover, 10 years later, with Milo, Artemis Darth Vader, and Tyson. For real.)
Basically, every single connection in Made For You was built on love. No matter whether Ben and Jack last forever, I don’t doubt they will always base their choices in love. And also, the love the adults feel for each other is nothing compared to the love they feel for Milo.
That makes Made for You one of my favorites.
