From the moment I finished Kings Rising there’s been a hole in my heart.  That trilogy was my everything from the the very first book, Captive Prince.  Upon the completion of the last book, Ms. Pacat announced that she would be releasing 3 more short stories, but then that would be it.  She would close the door on this world.

From then on I’ve been in this weird place, wanting these short stories to come out but not wanting them to come at the same time.  I don’t want this to end.  I don’t want to say goodbye to Laurent, Damen, and even Jord.

Alas, we’ve gotten our first short story with the release of Green But For A Season.  This is the story of Jord and Aimeric, with flashbacks of a young Laurent and how the Prince’s Guard came to be.

I admit I enjoyed reading about Aimeric and Jord, seeing how things played out behind the scenes of Prince’s Gambit, but the real beauty of this short story was the glimpse we got of a young Laurent.  I loved having the opportunity to read him as a 15 year old boy, learning how to navigate the treacherous life at the Palace.  I loved getting that early show of Laurent’s cunning; reading what might have been his first win over the Regent.

What reading Green But For A Season really did was make me want to run over to my bookshelf and pick up Captive Prince and reread it immediately.  I’m forcing myself to wait until 2017, but you can bet that I’m going to have it in my hands January 1st!
