Review:
“On the other side of the camp, the Prince was dismounting effortlessly, untouched by the day’s exertions, his haughty posture unaffected. He didn’t even seem to have dust on on his boots-typical.”
From the moment I finished Kings Rising there’s been a hole in my heart. That trilogy was my everything from the the very first book, Captive Prince. Upon the completion of the last book, Ms. Pacat announced that she would be releasing 3 more short stories, but then that would be it. She would close the door on this world.
From then on I’ve been in this weird place, wanting these short stories to come out but not wanting them to come at the same time. I don’t want this to end. I don’t want to say goodbye to Laurent, Damen, and even Jord.
Alas, we’ve gotten our first short story with the release of Green But For A Season. This is the story of Jord and Aimeric, with flashbacks of a young Laurent and how the Prince’s Guard came to be.
I admit I enjoyed reading about Aimeric and Jord, seeing how things played out behind the scenes of Prince’s Gambit, but the real beauty of this short story was the glimpse we got of a young Laurent. I loved having the opportunity to read him as a 15 year old boy, learning how to navigate the treacherous life at the Palace. I loved getting that early show of Laurent’s cunning; reading what might have been his first win over the Regent.
What reading Green But For A Season really did was make me want to run over to my bookshelf and pick up Captive Prince and reread it immediately. I’m forcing myself to wait until 2017, but you can bet that I’m going to have it in my hands January 1st!
“The Prince did not cultivate companions; had not done so as a boy, did not do so as a young man. Jord felt as if he was intruding on something private; he was startled by their quiet focus, how close they stood together, their shoulders almost touching.”
You know I’m dying to read this review, but I won’t until I have read the book! But I’m glad to see you got five feathers worth of enjoyment out of it!

Thank you! My sister actually draws all of it then uploads it into her computer and turns them into images for me. I’m really lucky to have her. I’m sure she’s tired of hearing me go, “You know what I need?? Buy buttons!!” Or any of the new ideas I have. 😀

I’m not familiar with this series, but you’ve got me curious now and I feel my TBR about to grow yet again, haha 🙂 Great review!

A lot of people would hesitate because it is classified as M/M, but the story has sooo much more depth to it then the ‘romance’ genre alludes to. It’s waaaay more of a fantasy series than it is a romantic series. I’d love to convince more people to read it.
