Romance Fails in Fiction Tag

Wow, this tag actually makes me nervous.  I’m not sure I know exactly what a romance ‘fail’ is.  Is that a romance that doesn’t work out?  Or one that does, despite how unbelievable it is?  I tried googling it, but there was nothing concrete so I guess I’m going to wing it.  I’ll include a little of both.  I hope I get this right!

Thank you, Kate for tagging me in it.  I promise to do my best! All of you should go check out her blog Melting Pot and other Calamities, it’s pretty amazing.

Just a heads up, everything that I mention below is probably considered a spoiler.  So, there’s that.  Read at your own risk!

The Rules:

  • Please pingback Kate @ Melting Pots and Other Calamities. Please pingback a specific post, so that she’ll get notification.
  • You can choose ten romance fails from any media you like: books, movies, anime, manga, T.V shows, or Webtoons. You can even mix them up if you want.
  • You can choose funny fails or serious ones; for the serious ones, please phrase it humorously. Remember, this is a fun tag! It’s not meant to be serious.
  • Mention who’s who in the fails. (I.E, who fails and who is the recipient of the failure). If there isn’t  recipient, per se, just state the couple (or non-couple).
  • Optional: Rank the failures from least extreme to most extreme.
  • 5 failures at LEAST.
  • Tag as many people as you want, but at least one person.

The Tag:

Throne of GlassThrone of Glass – Celaena and Chaol

Girl and boy become friends, care for each other, then slowly fall in love.  Then girl blames boy for something that was not his fault, tries to kill him, and then hates him forever!

Oh, I’m sorry, was that supposed to be funny?  Oops!

twilightTwilight – Edward and Bella

Dead boy falls in love with human girl, treats her as though she is something he can control under the guise of keeping her ‘safe’, then eventually kills her so they can be dead together forever.

I don’t know why anyone thought this was a good idea.

the-sherbrooke-brideThe Sherbrooke Bride – Alexandra and Douglas

Earl sets out to marry most beautiful girl in the realm, only to find himself unknowingly married to her little sister.  He then proceeds to treat her like crap by repeatedly insulting her, until he eventually falls in love with her.

Oddly, I love this book.  Somehow everything worked out in the end.

Parasite

Parasitology – Sal and Nathan

Boy and Girl have been dating for a while, then they find out that girl isn’t actually human.  She’s a tapeworm living in the brain of a dead body and driving it like a car.  They proceed to continue their sexual relationship.

YUCK! As good as this story was, I can’t get past Sal being a WORM!

Hard TimeHard Time – Annie and Eric

Girl gets a job working in a prison, where she catches the eye of sexy inmate.  They proceed to send secret notes back and forth, beginning an illicit and illegal affair while he’s locked up.

Despite that insane plot, this is still one of my all time fav romances!

About Birdie

Don’t look for her in any bar, club, crazy raging party, or anywhere there may be a large gathering of strangers. She’s more likely to be found tucked into the corner of the couch watching one of her favorite shows, or preferably under a comforter with her current novel.

  1. The Throne of Glass romance between Celaena and Chaol was tragic! It’s been a couple of years since I read it, but isn’t there a scene where he’s just crying in a cupboard afterwards? 😛
Also, that Twilight synopsis is hilarious!

  2. Thank you for tagging me! I’ve never seen this tag before, but it looks like fun. I like how different it is! I agree with you on the Bella & Edward couple, no idea who thought that was a good idea! 😛

  3. “Then girl blames boy for something that was not his fault, tries to kill him, and then hates him forever!” YES, THANK YOU! That was not Chaol’s fault and I never understood why the heck did Celaena blame him… Oh right, because Maas wanted readers to hate him so she could end up with Rowan *oops*
Thanks for letting me know about Parasitology! I had it on my TBR but after this, I’ll never read it I think xD Unless they’re not the main couple? I’m not sure because it’s been a while since I’ve read the synopsis.
Great post and thank you for tagging me! 🙂

      1. Exactly! For me it was Heir of Fire who totally messed it up because up until then I still had hopes they’d get back together…
Ugh honestly, I’m still a hard shipper for them but I’ve come to lose interest in the series because of it (and some other stuff). I have yet to read the last two books but I’m really hoping Tower of Dawn (Chaol’s book) is remotely redeeming because otherwise I will flip!!
Thankfully, there’s fanfiction hahaha I just can’t believe Maas was that obvious and people didn’t mind it at all. They easily got on board with her new idea, which saddens me but hey, at least their ship is fine xD
Ah I see. But I don’t think I can enjoy a story properly if the romance is not good… It’s sad but true xD Unless I don’t care for them. If I care for them, then it’s useless.

      2. Absolutely my thoughts! I was so certain they were endgame and to have that ripped away from me so cruelly (and senselessly – because if there had been a logical reason I would have understood but not like this!) just felt so wrong. I felt actually betrayed by the author -_-
Yup, counting on it because I don’t think my heart can take any more disappointment…

      3. Mine too! I’m so glad to find someone else who thinks so because most people actually hate him – incomprehensible to me because he was probably the only real, flawed and fleshed out character in the whole series.

      4. I think so too. He was so well-balanced and had his beliefs, of course, but he was always a really amazing friend and love interest. He always made sure to protect Celaena, help and support her, but he wasn’t going to let himself become a doormat. I think that’s what most people don’t understand. I also adored his relationship with Dorian.
I just thought the whole thing super ridiculous. But oh well! Tower of Dawn 😉

Lol thanks 🙂 I’m too much of a hopeless romantic so this would be a really hard post to do. Maybe one day.
