I’ve seen The Unpopular Opinions Book Tag going around for a while now, and I was thisclose to just tagging myself when Whimsically Meghan tagged me! Thank you so much for thinking of me, Meghan! I appreciate it.
Meghan writes about more than just books. She also writes movie reviews, does photo blogs, and talks music. She’s got a little something for everyone, so please pop over and check her out!
I have so many unpopular book opinions, this should be a ton of fun!
- A POPULAR BOOK OR BOOK SERIES THAT YOU DIDN’T LIKE
I don’t think this tag is going to make me very popular… I guess that’s the point, right?
I’d have to pick Lunar Chronicles. Every time I see someone raving about this series I feel like I’m not part of the cool club. The thing is, I enjoyed the first book. I enjoyed the second. I also enjoyed the third. It was the fourth book that really tanked the series for me. I found that I didn’t like Cinder much at all, and the one character I did love was completely shafted and ripped apart.
- A POPULAR BOOK OR SERIES EVERYONE ELSE SEEM TO HATE BUT YOU LOVE
I’m not sure why people don’t like The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett. I thought it was original and thought provoking. I liked Lizzie, and I thought the author did a great job showcasing Lizzie’s emotional battles.
I also liked that the romance wasn’t important to the story. It was more about Lizzie, and how she felt about herself. There is a romance, but it’s secondary to the main story, which always makes a book better. I didn’t love it, but I did really enjoy it. (I think I even cried.)
- AN OTP THAT YOU DON’T LIKE
For some reason this tag makes me feel bad. I really hate alienating people.
I almost went with Bella and Edward, but I think that’s just too obvious. Instead I’m going to go with Jace and Clary. What a codependent relationship. Neither one made the other stronger, and in Jace’s case it’s almost like over the course of the series he got weaker and weaker. By the end this supposed ‘badass’ was consistently needing to be saved.
- A POPULAR BOOK GENRE THAT YOU HARDLY REACH FOR
NA, unfortunately. I’ve tried multiple books and I consistently find then overly angsty and dramatic. I can’t handle it. I hate characters who refuse to just talk to each other. I hate when that miscommunication causes unnecessary angst and pain. It’s an automatic pet peeve of mine.
- A POPULAR BELOVED CHARACTER THAT YOU DON’T LIKE
I do not like Celaena at all. I was on the fence about her in Throne of Glass, and by the end of the second book I couldn’t stand her.
Is she powerful? Yes. Is she deadly? For sure.
She was also unreasonable, cruel, and a completely unsympathetic character. I know I won’t continue reading the series, and I’m not even sad about it.
- A POPULAR AUTHOR THAT YOU CAN’T SEEM TO GET INTO
Sarah Dessen is a big one. I know I like other authors similar to Dessen, but Dessen herself just doesn’t do it for me. I think that’s why I haven’t read Jenny Han yet. My head says they seem similar, and that makes me worry I won’t like Han either.
- A POPULAR BOOK TROPE THAT YOU ARE TIRED OF SEEING
Too much miscommunication. I think the older I get the more I get excited by healthy relationships being depicted in novels. I’m so tired of the neverending mistrust and push and pull of overly dramatic romances.
- A POPULAR SERIES THAT YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN READING
I think this is going to be a throwaway pick, but it’s the only book I can think of at the moment. It’s one that I feel very strongly about.
I won’t read published fanfiction, particularly Twilight fanfiction, so I knew I wouldn’t be reading this even when it first released. That idea of never wanting to read this book only grew stronger the more rabid the fans got. I entertained the idea of the movie, when Charlie Hunnam was going to be in it, but luckily he dropped out and saved me. Thank goodness!
- THE SAYING GOES «THE BOOK IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN A MOVIE». BUT WHAT TV SHOW OR MOVIE ADAPTATION DO YOU PREFER MORE THAN THE BOOK?
I feel very strongly about the Maze Runner book series. I enjoyed the first one, but each book after got worse and worse. The third book was a disaster for me. However, the movies (or at least the two that are out) were awesome! Even my husband adored them, and that’s saying a lot.

I’m not going to tag anyone this time around. I feel like most people have done this tag, but if you haven’t and you want to, don’t wait as long as I did. Just use this opportunity to tag yourself, and ping me so I can read your Unpopular Opinions!
I avoided Lizzie Lovett because of the negativity. Glad to hear you liked it. I love Dessen (and Han too). They know how to balance the emotions in their stories, and that is something I really like. I also have no interest in Shades. Just not into BDSM, and if I let any erotica into my life, I prefer an erotic romance to erotica. I need some story with my sex. Oddly enough, I DNFed both the movie and book version of the Maze Runner. I just could not get into either.

I’ve read books that would classify as erotic romance, but usually I like my love stories ‘romance’ heavy, rather than overly sexual.

Very interesting tag Wendy. I love Aelin and Jace with Clary. I can’t appreciate John Green’s books even if I love similar authors

I think John Green is an acquired taste. I definitely love him.

Miscommunication really frustrates me- particularly when its down to the stubbornness of a character! It was one of the things that really disappointed me about the last YA book I read. I agree with you about The Maze Runner. I read the first book in two days, but I felt the series lost its focus at the end!

Oh man yes! I really liked the first book, but then it was like each book after that progressively a let down.

Totally agree with you about the Maze Runner movies! I almost chose those when I did this tag. I wasn’t a big fan of the books, but I found the movies much more entertaining. I thought the actors did a great job and they made me like the characters more than when I was reading the books, lol.

Heck yeah, that’s exactly how I felt. I did like the first book, but I liked the movie a lot more. Did you see the second movie? It was even better than the first.

I did see the second movie! Both of them were so entertaining in a way the books could just not hold my attention. These movies are always the first to come to mind when people say “the book is always better than the movie” hahaha. NOPE.

I think the same thing! They’re the first to come to my mind too. And I thought it was funny because I didn’t like the second book as much as the first one, but I liked the second movie more than the first one.

I agree I don’t like Aelin/Celaena and I hate clary and jace even more when they are together

Yes! I hate them more when they’re together too. I just never saw what everyone loved.

Aw thank you for the kind words! 🙂 I’m very glad that you really wanted to do this! 😀
Haha, I have to admit that I have read all the Fifty Shades books, 1) because I was curious and 2 because I really hate leaving a series unfinished. Those are valid points right?!?! 😛
I really enjoyed the Maze Runner movies too! The books, I agree were just kinda ehh.

I’m the same way! I hate not finishing a series that I’ve started. I’ve done it, but it wasn’t a conscious choice, just something that happened because there were other things I “needed to read first”, haha.

I agree with you about Sarah Dessen!! I mean I’m a YA contemporary nerd so really it’s like Sarah Dessen is written for me but I just can’t get into them. And I think her writing is beautiful but something about her books always turn me off. (Even though I still end up reading every one because MAYBE THIS WILL BE DIFFERENT). However, Jenny Han is one of my FAVORITE authors so I highly suggest getting into her! She’s not really that similar in my opinion besides the fact that they both write YA contemporary. Han’s characters are a lot easier to relate to and I think her books are a lot more character driven. Also, she doesn’t try to write those outcast type books where they’re kinda weird you know? I feel like Dessen does that a lot. It’s not like Han writes about popular characters but they just seem, idk, normal? Like they’re not trying to be forced into any one stereotype. Also, her characters are just a ton more relatable. I love every single one of them because they are all so well fleshed out. And the family dynamics in Han’s books are a lot better than Dessen. Dessen writes a lot of books with bad family relationships but Han’s are the opposite and her families are always so sweet. And WOW this was really long but I guess I feel strongly about this topic? haha

Lol! I love it. And you’ve definitely won me over. Dessen’s characters just didn’t feel real to me. They were kinda cliched. It sounds like Han is better there, so Ill definitely try!

Yay I’m glad!! I hope you enjoy Han as much as I did! I definitely loved To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before better than The Summer I Turned Pretty because TSITP RIPPED my heart out while TATBILB is just so cute and mushy and marshmallowey

I think I’ll go with cute and mushy first, lol! I don’t want to start with something that hurts me! 😀

Great post 🙂

Thanks! Unnecessary miscommunication definitely breaks a book for me. I don’t know why, but it just makes me so angry!

The miscommunication thing drives me batty, too. Like after a certain point you are literally a moron for not just talking to the person. I think what really bugs me is how rarely that is actually pointed out though. Like nobody says, “man if I had just talked to them, this could have been avoided.” Like it’s just assumed that we’re incapable of that.

You are so right. Maybe it wouldn’t be my biggest pet peeve if they did recognize their faults, but they never do. They constantly just try to justify it. I hate it.

I think they are enamored with Pride and Prejudice but not putting in the work to pull it off.

I would say I’m with you on the 50 Shades of Grey series, but I did read the first one a few years back because I was hearing such mixed things about it. I read it and pretty much spent the entirety of the novel swinging between downright horrified and extremely uncomfortable.
Great answers!

Thanks, Jazz! I think that’s how I would feel if I read it too. Plus, as much as I don’t want to read that series, I have to admit that I was planning to see the movie when Charlie Hunnam was going to play the lead. I love him, haha. I was saved when he dropped out.
