Top 5 Tuesday | P to T, My Characters

Week #2 makes me want to break out my Michael.

PYT! P through T.

Repeat after ME, P through T!

Top 5 Tuesday was originally hosted by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, but recently found it’s home with Meeghan at Meeghan Reads.

P – Phaedra

“She made a sound of regret. ‘We come second, you and I, Luc-ien,’ she said. ‘Our allegiance is always to our kingdoms. Without that allegiance, our people would fall.’
She placed her head back against his chest and he felt her tears. ‘This is not our time.’
‘But that will never mean I love you less,’ he said.”

Melina Marchetta, Quintana of Charyn

I’ve noticed a repeat of authors over the last few weeks. It drives the point home that I’m a character reader, and my favorite authors are character driven authors.
In fact, P and Q on this list are from the same series. This same series was also featured for letter F.
If this isn’t proof you should read Lumatere Chronicles, I don’t know what is.

Q – Quintana of Charyn

“Oh, you’re one of those,’ the princess said.
‘One of what?’
‘One of those who needs to be told their worth over and over by others. Do you know who tells me my worth, Phaedra of Alonso?’
The princess pointed a hard finger at her own chest.
‘Me. I determine my own worth. If I had to rely on others I’d have lain down and died waiting.”

Melina Marchetta , Quintana of Charyn

Quintana of Charyn is the best character I’ve ever read. Look, it pains me to say it. Even now, I struggle to write these words. But if I could erect a statue of only one character from any book I’ve ever read, it would be Quintana. She is not “good”. She’s definitely not bad. She’s broke herself to survive. Saying that sentence makes me ache, but also makes me love her even more.
My Little Queen.

R – Reiner Kulti

“Every single thing that has ever happened in my life has led me here, Sal. Destiny is a ladder, a series of steps that takes you where you’re supposed to go. I am the man that I am, and I have done the things that I’ve done, to get me to you.”

Mariana Zapata, Kulti

I’ve read a lot of Zapata lately, and I’ve loved a lot of them. Kulti is my favorite, and it’s only because of Kulti himself. He’s so driven that he knows what he wants immediately, but he’s patient. He bides his time. I also loved his gruffness. I love gruff men. He was also extremely cocky, which is another of my favorite personalities. He was a winner all over.

S – Sevro

“I killed their pack leader,’ Sevro says when I ask why the wolves follow him. He looks me up and down and flashes me an impish grin from beneath the wolf pelt. ‘Don’t worry, I wouldn’t fit in your skin.”

Pierce Brown, Red Rising

I think Sevro will be on a lot of lists.
There was something about his character that made all of us fall in love. He was small, but he was so fierce. I think, had he wanted to, he could have taken down Darrow too. He didn’t want to be the hero. I wanted to be the assassin, and a damn good one he was.

T – Theodore

“Does it bother you that I’m not a virgin?” He hesitated a moment before “You’re too precious to put into words. I think … it’s like one of Theodore’s buttons. If you asked him why he cared about them so, he would tell you it’s because they exist at all.”

T.J. Klune, The House in the Cerulean Sea

Everyone talks about Chauncy or Lucy, and don’t get me wrong, they were wonderful children/characters, but it was Theodore and his buttons who really stole my heart. I loved his little chirps, and his little hideout with his hoard. I mean, a tiny little Wyvern. How can you not love him?!

About Birdie

Don’t look for her in any bar, club, crazy raging party, or anywhere there may be a large gathering of strangers. She’s more likely to be found tucked into the corner of the couch watching one of her favorite shows, or preferably under a comforter with her current novel.

  1. Can I tell you a secret, Birdie?? I have ALLLLL of these books on my bookshelf (excpt Kulti which is on my KU loan list), and I haven’t read any of them.
Every year I’m all “yes, I’ll totally read the Lumatere Chronicles” and it never happens. I own TWO copies of Finnikin. It’s very bad.
    Great list, as always 💕
